You need to make some goals. For example, you should be able to read Chinese newspapers, understand a TV show, or have a“normal speed”conversation with any Chinese person.

First, find a Chinese text you would like to read. This could be a text on your computer or a Chinese web page. Pinyin and English definitions are useful if available.

我很好，你呢？(I’m fine. And you?)
A: wǒ yě hěnhǎo, xièxie!
我也很好，谢谢！(Me too, thank you!)
As you know, Chinese people would like to talk about eating. So there are another very native greetings way in China we will do like this:
A: nǐ chī le mɑ？
你吃了吗？(Have you eaten ?)
B: chīle\ méichī, nǐne?
吃了\ 没吃，你呢？(Yes\no, and you?)
A: wǒ yě chīle\ wǒ yě méi chī.
我也吃了\ 我也没吃。(Me too.)
Then you can talk with them like “what did you eat, what kind of food you like, what’s the best restaurant you know...” and finally you can invite them to have a dinner together if you would like to.
2. Some basic word or phrase you have to know in China.
