Making Appointments with Clients in Chinese

Image
Before we plan to make an appointment with clients , the first thing we should do is to determine the time to meet with each other. How to express that in Business Chinese ? Today, we are going to talk about scheduling an appointment time with phone-calls or e-mails. When we are talking on the phone, we usually ask for one’s free time by using the question “您什么时候有空儿?<nín shénme shíhou yǒu kònɡr?>” , which means “When will you be free?.” “有空儿<yǒu kònɡr>” means “have free time.” There is also another formal way to ask through “您什么时候方便?<nín shénme shíhou fānɡbiàn?>”. Here “方便<fānɡbiàn>” means “When would it be convenient for you?” If you tend to propose a detailed time and to wait for other’s opinions, the sentence pattern “……可以吗?<......kéyǐ mɑ?>” will be a good choice. For example, given that your will is to know whether he or she will be free on tomorrow, you could enquire by “明天上午可以吗?<mínɡtiān shànɡwǔ kéyǐ mɑ?> ”. You could also change the

Ask Questions about Country and Nationality

Image
Yesterday, I got a message from my friend about Chinese Learning, about" Where are you from?" Well, this question always happens on the first meet between you and Chinese people in China, it is a question about your nationality. According to this case, I make the same kind of questions together, and the examples below: Question 1 nǐ shì nǎ lǐ rén? ◆你是哪里人? (What's your nationality?/Where do you come from?) Answer 1 wǒ shì+Country+rén ◆我是+Country+人 (I am American. I am Chinese....and so on) Eg: wǒ shì zhōnɡ ɡuó rén。 ◆我是中国人。 (I am Chinese.) Question 2 nǐ lái zì nǎ gè guó jiā? ◆你来自哪个国家? (Which country do you come from?) Answer 2 wǒ lái zì+Country ◆我来自+Country (I come from......) Eg: wǒ lái zì zhōnɡ ɡuó。 ◆我来自中国。 (I come from China.) The next two questions are the Yes/No Question Sentences. And the answers of this kind of questions always have a rule: Put the "yes or no" in front of the sentences to tell the people

How to Use "非" and "无"

Image
As the study progressed, foreign students will begin to encounter some words left from ancient Chinese. Most of these words are monosyllabic, meaning complicated because of historical precipitation. Today we are going to learn two words, "fēi 非" and "wú 无". Because these two words are similar in meaning, they are easily confused by foreign students. The words left over from ancient Chinese have two important characteristics:they are mostly monosyllabic and have complex meanings. The complexity of meaning is manifested in the inclusion of multiple parts of speech. Because the part of speech is different, the usage is different. Therefore to distinguish "fē i非" and "wú 无", we need to start from here. First of all, we should distinguish the meaning of “fēi 非”and “wú 无”. 1.the basic meaning of “fēi 非”: 1)  no,not:  bù 不, bú shì 不是。eg."非法<Fēifǎ>"(illegal; unlawful) 2)  fault, mistake:  eg. "痛改前非<Tòng gǎi qián fēi>

2017 Chinese Ghost Festival - “中元节(zhōng yuán jié)”

Image
Accompanied with long history from ancient times, Chinese culture , especially Chinese festivals have experienced various momentous changes and have been influenced by foreign cultures as well. The Ghost Festival , which we address it in “中元节(zhōng yuán jié)” in Chinese, is a traditional day that came into being from native Taoism but influenced by Buddhism. It is also regarded as Chinese Halloween as before because Chinese people usually hold a memorial ceremony for dead spirits in this day, and they believe that their deceased families and friends will come back home. However, Chinese Ghost festival is almost different from Halloween, which will be presented in the following words. The Ghost Festival is celebrated at 15th July in Chinese lunar calendar, which will be 5th September this year. You may observe its another name, the Hungry Ghost Festival. Why was it named after by that? In the Taoist legends, there was Earth God who was in charge of the netherworld. At mid-July,

Seven Useful Chinese Proverbs

Chinese proverbs are common and often have stories behind them. The proverb ‘Fate brings people even they are thousands of miles away’ (有缘千里来相会: yǒu yuán qiān lǐ lái xiāng huì) is about a couple who live thousands of miles away met each other despite all difficulties. As we all know, in ancient times, people’s mobility was limited, and young couples met each other only after the approval of their parents. So this proverb points out that human relationships are decreed by Fate. Today, I chose some interesting Chinese proverbs and sayings, and let’s have a look at the stories behind them! Luóbo báicài, gè yǒu suǒ ài 1. 萝卜白菜,各有所爱 (‘some people like carrot, but others like cabbage’. This proverb indicates that everyone has his own hobbies.) ài wū jí wū 2. 爱屋及乌 (‘when you love a house, you will love the crow under the roof’, means ‘Love me, love my dog’ in English. ) 3. rén xīn qí, Tài shān yí 人心齐,泰山移 (Tài shān is one of the five great mou
