Learn Chinese Through Games

Learning Chinese is becoming more and more popular, but how to make the class active and more interesting is what every Chinese teacher wants to know. Here are some games that support teaching and practicing.

1. Looking for Colors

The teacher can give the name of an object in Chinese, such as “apple,” and ask students to tell its color. You can use what you learn from this game to speak a whole Chinese sentence.
For example:
The teacher say: 树 shù (tree).
Student can answer:
shù shì lǜsè de.
树 是 绿色 的。(The tree is green.)

2. Simon Says

The teacher can draw a figure of an imaginary “Simon” on the blackboard and introduce him to everyone. Then, the teacher can give an order to everyone on behalf of Simon. For example, when everyone hears “Simon says: 起立 qǐlì (stand)!”, they need stand up. "Simon says: 坐下zuòxià (sit)!", then everyone needs to sit sown. If someone is wrong, then he or she is eliminated from the game. The winner is the person without any mistakes during the game.
For example:
The teacher say: 树 shù ( tree).
Student can answer:
shù shì lǜsè de.
树 是 绿色的。(The tree is green.)

3. Touch a Bomb

A lot of foreigner students are not wiling to talk and repeat a word or sentence from a lesson in the class. So you can use this way to help the student practice. Teacher can prepare some word cards, the positive side is the word, but some of opposite have a bomb logo. That’s mean this word cannot read. If someone read it by accident, he will get a bomb. The rest of student can count "1.2.3.", then make a voice like the bomb goes off. Everyone can smash him with the balloon. This game can make the class very interest and Atmosphere is very good. Student can learn the Chinese in fun and mater the knowledge very stable.

4. 此呼彼应 [cǐ hū bǐ yìng] 

The teacher needs a set of flashcards and blackboard or white board for this game. To start, the teacher draws some new characters on the board then takes out the corresponding card from the stack of flashcards. The student needs to match the card with the correct character. The teacher can create some fun ways to reward the right answers to motivate students to participate.

5. Bounce the Ball

This game helps learners practice numbers and math.
1) Divide students into teams of two or three, and have them close their eyes.
2) The teacher will bounce a ball, and students need to count how many times it bounced. Let’s suppose that it bounced 19 times.
3) The teacher then asks how many times the ball bounced. The student who responds with the right answer earns a point for his/her team. Meanwhile, this student will take the teacher’s place to bounce the ball and keep the game going. However, if the student was wrong, then another group can give the answer and so on until someone gets the right answer.
4) The group with the highest score wins. You can change the game, as well. The teacher can stop bouncing the ball and then start again. For example: bounce 4 times first, then stop a while. Continue to bounce 8 times. The students will answer: “4+8=13”.
